What makes our group portraits work?

We follow a few fundamental rules to make our group photos special.

A great group photo starts with the set-up. Integral to any great shot is interesting color and light. This includes where we shoot, what lighting we use and what our clients wear. When choosing a background, we think about relationship between the group and its environment. We ask, “how can we give this team photo context?” The environment helps to showcase who our clients are, what they do, and where they work. These elements are key to make a team shot rich and appealing.

Next, we focus on how to arrange our subjects. A prime rule we follow is that every person has their own space. Though we are capturing a group, we want each individual to stand out. To create interesting design, we arrange our clients in rows of two, three, or four. Often times, we have subjects angle in varied directions and sit down to create different levels. In so doing, we form subtle triangles, as you can see in the AURA team shot below. By carving out groupings within groups, we create visual relationships.

Lastly, in every group shot we capture a strong moment. To us, a ‘moment’ is a shared instance when subjects are focused, engaged, and comfortable. This typically comes after a good laugh or a smile refresh. There is cohesiveness in that moment, which is the culmination to a beautiful group portrait.
